Women and Democracy
Women and democracy was the subject raised by Cllr Sue James with the Leader of Cornwall Council and the Council’s lead officer for equality and diversity. From the meeting there is agreement that a discussion paper will be prepared for an informal meeting of the Reputation and Performance Portfolio Advisory Committee looking at what the Council does to reach out to groups under represented as elected members to Cornwall Council. Research evidence will be considered on what deters women more than men from standing and any examples of good practice elsewhere will be brought forward for consideration in Cornwall. The evidence is being gathered now so if any readers have any thoughts or can point Sue in the direction of useful evidence then get in touch.
The links below are for a VSO campaign looking to put pressure on world leaders to ensure more women have a say on solving world problems and for those wanting to get a wider view on women and democracy there is a useful link to the Centre for Women and Democracy. Cllr Sue James has signed up to the Women in Power Campaign.
