Links to Useful Local Websites
Giving links to other local Websites that I think you might find useful might seem an odd thing to do BUT, as I wind down as a local Councillor and post less frequently on here, I want you to think where you might want to connect to in future.
The first link is going to be to St Just Town Council’s new revamped website: St Just-in-Penwith Town Council
Here you will find all important local information regarding the local facilities the Town Council are responsible for, plus links for reporting things to Cornwall Council and information on road closures, etc etc.
The next website folk might think is aimed at tourists/ visitor to the area but it is definitely a useful network for local businesses to consider and there is definitely useful information for local people, whether you have lived here all your life or just moved down. Tin Coast
I’m going to give a plug to an informal business network – Far West Business Network. It is relatively recently formed and meets at the café at the old Warren’s Factory in St Just. Far West Business Network
Next we are heading to a charity I was involved in setting up over a decade ago and still chair. Lands End Peninsula Community Land Trust has evolved since it began in 2010 when its focus was local housing and food growing/ production. Currently, we are still trying to provide housing for local people (very hard when a small charity), we have provided and manage the skate park in St Just (no responsibility for the rest of the park) and very soon we will be opening the 1st Community run Cemetery in the UK in Pendeen, next to the Centre of Pendeen. Our website is a new innovation and we are still learning to make use of it BUT it will give you a good idea of what we are doing and how to get involved or get in touch with any of the projects. Lands End Peninsula CLT
The next website is the Safer Cornwall one. On Facebook pages people are often concerned about things that are in the broadest sense, antisocial behaviour. People often feel the Police won’t be interested/ have the resources to respond and this part of Cornwall Council might well give you other ideas and people to contact to take action rather than feel unhappy and concerned that our community is being affected. Safer Cornwall
The next is very slightly Political…..There are local election in May 2025. I am not standing BUT St Just needs at least 13 good people to put themselves forward in order that local people will get any kind of vote on who they want to represent them locally – more often than not less than 12 stand so they become your Councillors unopposed. Keep an eye on the Town Council website, above, as there might be information days on being a Councillor and anyone can attend Town Council meetings as an observer, to see what we do.
There will also be Cornwall Council elections (Politics warning) and St Ives constituency Liberal Democrats are looking for Members / people willing to become Members to stand as Liberal Democrat Cornwall Council Candidates. We need candidates throughout the constituency from St Ives to the Lizard to Land’s End but some places will be a higher priority then others. If you want to find out more then by all means contact me (I am leading on getting candidates approved) or our Office by emailing organiser@stiveslibdems.org.uk
There is lots of guidance on becoming a Councillor on the Cornwall Council website BUT, if you are just pondering whether that is something you could do, at Town, Parish of Cornwall level then best start by talking to a current councillor. The link to Cornwall Council’s website is here though: Be a Councillor in Cornwall
