Streetlights will be turning off between Midnight and 5a.m from Monday
Most Streetlights in our St Just Parish will be turning off between Midnight and 5a.m from Monday 26th February.
As you may be aware Cornwall Council has been working towards switching off streetlighting in certain circumstances. Switch off and dimming will be coming to almost all communities.
There have been a number of examples from across the country and Europe where authorities have adopted this best practice, to save carbon, save costs and to contribute to improving the environment for nature. In Cornwall this process began in December 2023 with a small selection of ‘willing adopters’ across 10 parishes, and the Council are now progressing the roll-out.
The next areas to be added to the switch-off profile are St Just-in-Penwith and St Mabyn. They plan to switch-off streetlighting (midnight to 5am) in the week beginning 26 February.
There has been a careful selection process, including liaison with local police, in choosing the most appropriate streetlights to switch off.
The Council are sure that soon this will be seen as the norm, however in exceptional circumstances some lights could be returned to current operation or requests for further lights to be turned off will be considered and assessed.
There is an Interactive Mapping Page that will show the exact lights that will be switch-off. Please note the latest update will be over the coming weekend.
