16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence – St Just and Pendeen Update
For background of what 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence is all about, see my previous post –Background of Campaign
Work is gathering pace to ensure that St Just and Pendeen are taking part in this years programme.
Walk & Vigil in Penzance
This will take place on 25 November, meeting in Wherrytown car park at 5:30p.m. Pendeen and St Just WI’s have agreed to take part, bringing flags, making it easy for St Just Parish participants to gather and walk together. We are exploring lift sharing and / or minibus possibilities.
Having attended previous events, it is a powerful and evocative gathering, especially the vigil and reading the names of women who have been killed. There is also entertainment in terms of singing and dance, capturing emotions beautifully.
Bystander Training in St Just
This will be general training to help staff, volunteers, relatives, neighbours and friends to step in to constructively support and help victims of Domestic Abuse.
Shoe Installation
It is hoped that St Just will be chosen as a location for a powerful installation of 19 pairs of shoes, representing 19 women from Cornwall who can lo longer walk in them, as they were victims of Domestic Homicide. This will likely be in St Just Library, alongside information boards.
Fundraising
West Cornwall Women’s Aid does brilliant work to support victims of domestic abuse but they rely heavily on donations. So, we thought the 16 Days campaign was an ideal opportunity to help them and we hope you will give what you can.
Plans so far are to have a collection tin in St Just Library; Pendeen WI will have their raffle at their December Market for them and St Just WI will sell cakes at their Christmas Market on 1 December.
