Visit to Geevor Tin Mine

Sue James believes Geevor Tin Mine museum could provide a real jobs boost to the local economy in future.
I have just visited Geevor Tin Mine to meet with officers from Cornwall Council and Trustees from Pendeen Community Heritage Trust (PCH). I felt it was a constructive meeting with all sides putting their cards on the table. Although I have no history of involvement with Geevor Tin Mine, other than visiting like any other member of the public, I felt it was a partnership coming of age! I attended a little fearful that there would be money pressures difficult for both sides to agree on but came away quite excited for the future.
People will have mixed views about Cornwall Council being involved here and there will be what I call the Marmite situation – some will think it is great and more investment should be offered and some will feel it is awful and not a penny of local taxes should go there. Well I came away believing that for relatively modest and reducing investments there is a real prospect that PCH are about to leap up a level. I think it will be increasingly significant to our local economy, drawing visitors in to the area, and will also play a more significant role in terms of providing some good quality jobs.
I think Geevor Tin Mine will also be a place that is worth re-visiting, to monitor the changes and progress over the next few years. Check out www.thetraveltrunk.net to get their view. As this blogger says, the pasties are great!
