Kids’ Lit Quiz International Final 2014
Kids’ Lit Quiz International Final 2014 took place in Falmouth yesterday. An amazing event that should have got far more publicity than it did! An event that I would never have heard of or gone to if it had not been for the fact I was elected on to Cornwall Council in May 2013 and then campaigned, alongside the Librarian of Cape Cornwall School, to protect our St Just Library Service. I was given VIP treatment but felt a bit of a fraud amongst talented children, authors and the brilliant New Zealand quiz master, Wayne Mills.
Coached by school librarians, children aged 11 – 13 competed in heats to represent their country in the final. The quiz master devised ingenious questions to test the knowledge of teams on childrens’ literature. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, UK and the USA all had teams of 4 in the final.
I stood alongside author Tim Bowler and the Mayor of Falmouth to present the prizes to the winning teams but the knowledge of all teams was so incredible, I declare they were all winners! Among the organisers was our own local librarian at Cape Cornwall Secondary School, Megan Nelhams. Those who sponsored the event through money or goods were as wide ranging as The Commonwealth Education Trust, The Aboriginal Society, Nick Meyer, English Heritage and Rick Stein. How did it go so unnoticed by so many?
Thank you Megan for inviting me!!
