Creating Restorative Justice in Cornwall
Creating Restorative Justice in Cornwall is the title of an event being put on during International Justice Week. I find the use of the word ‘creating’ slightly strange, as if it is only just being invented, as I was involved in getting offenders to make amends and apologise for the wrong they had done back in the 80’s! That was with young people and I suppose it has never made it main stream because people don’t think it is ‘tough’ enough. Me, well I know it is tough because I have seen young lads cry on having to face up to the impact of their crime. I saw it turn people away from crime and saw prison confirm young people in their pattern of criminal behaviour.
To be fair to this event, they are looking to take Restorative Justice to adults and make it more a mainstream part of our Criminal Justice system. I am 100% behind that, as long as run by trained and skilled staff and that it is victim led. I believe it works AND it has the potential to cost less so everyone’s a winner!
I plan to attend the event so, if you want to find out more, come and join me at Falmouth Poly during the afternoon of 21 November. Complete the registration document first though!
