Jonathan Hancock receiving Civic Award, last year

Nominations for Civic Award wanted, of that special person in the St Just/ Pendeen area. Last year I nominated Jonathan Hancock and enjoyed time with him, his partner and other community minded folk, at County Hall.

For the Cornwall Civic Awards scheme for 2016, each Cornwall Councillor is being asked to put forward a nomination. Rather than me deciding who is deserving I’d like the community of my St Just electoral division to have a say.

I want you to tell me who you feel has achieved great things or goes above and beyond what is expected of them to make things happen.  It could be an exceptional carer; someone who has championed a cause through fundraising or someone who goes that extra mile further than is expected from them in their job, to ease and help the lives of others.

The Awards for 2015 recognised a huge range of people from those dedicated to the twinning of their towns; running neighbourhood watch schemes; school governors; fundraisers; Christmas Lights organisers and a Parish Priest.

The idea is that the person will not know they have been nominated but I would hope you would be fairly confident it is something they would accept. I need nominations by 21 March, which will give me a week or so to consider them and then make the nomination to the Chair of Cornwall Council.

Please email me your nomination stating the following:

  • Nominee Name:
  • Nominee Address:
  • Nominee email:
  • Nominee phone number:
  • What does this person do for the people of St Just/ Pendeen or wider area?
  • Why do you feel they are so special and should get the Cornwall Civic Award?
  • Your name, address and contact number:

It would be good to get more of our great local community characters recognised so the links below are awards that you could consider nominating people to, regardless of whether or not you put them forward to me too.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will nominate someone for recognition with a Civic Award.  I think we have loads of special people but you may know of someone working very quietly on things that I have not yet come across!

Remember, keep it secret! Email your nomination to
