New Administration at Cornwall Council
Liberal Democrat led administration will “put people first”
Today, Adam Paynter, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Cornwall Council, was elected as Leader of the Council in a joint administration with the Independent Group. Julian German of the Independents will serve as Deputy Leader.
In the light of last night’s tragic events in Manchester, Cllr Paynter said:
“All out thoughts are with the innocent people caught up in this vile attack. Our thanks go to the emergency services and the people of Manchester, who have been doing so much to help those affected.”
Speaking about the new administration, Cllr Paynter said:
“This is a new council with new talent. As a council we will want to protect services to our most vulnerable and increase funding to Adult Social Care. We will pledge to invest in excess of £200 million in building 1000 council houses for fair rent. We will also extend the living wage foundations living wage, to all council contracts.
“As councillors we were elected to do our very best for all the people of Cornwall and by taking up the challenge of leading Cornwall Council, we will be doing just that and seek to put people first.
“I will ensure that we deliver on the Cornwall Devolution Deal. We can show that we can competently and professionally work in the best interests of Cornwall and the UK. This will provide the most persuasive arguments for further powers and funding. Cornwall understands Cornwall and we need the ability to deliver the solutions to our own problems, in particular powers over planning and housing.
“We live in difficult financial times and I will ensure we utilise our finances as well as possible, I will lead a robust fairer funding campaign. I will also continue to seek to do things differently in order to preserve services.
“I will not be afraid to lead from the front when required although I will seek to build consensus on issues. I give you my commitment to work with all members irrespective of the party they represent and do my very best for Cornwall.”
