Natural England starting process to declare Penwith Moors a Site of Special Scientific Interest

Posted on: 20th March 2021

Natural England are starting the process to declare Penwith Moors a Site of Special Scientific Interest (an SSSI), to protect and enhance its special features and habitats. If this does happen, it will neither increase nor decrease access to the moors, unless there was a threat to specific habitats where footfall needed to be guided and managed but not removed.

Natural England’s timetable. Note this is a National not local process and whilst there will be local consultation and influence, decisions will not be local

The described benefits of an SSSI designation – some might disagree of course

Areas of Penwith Moor being considered for SSSI designation – green areas are the wetland features and the blue are surrounding farmland that is being considered for inclusion

Special flowers species found on Penwith Moors that it is felt warrant protection

Special Lichens found on Penwith Moors

Invertebrates found on Penwith moors that merit protection

Watch out for your chance to have your say. Land Owners will receive a letter but this may not be until the autumn/ winter time.
