Household Waste Recycling Charges

Posted on: 29th July 2014

Household waste recycling charges are being introduced for some limited categories of waste, from 1 September 2014.

  • Soil/ rubble (including bricks, blocks, tiles, paving slabs, concrete posts, sanitary ware etc.) £1.75 per sack
  • Plasterboard (including gypsum related products) £4.40 per sheet
  • Asbestos (bonded only) £10.10 per sheet
  • Tyres: Commercial and agricultural not accepted; bicycle free; all others £3.20 per tyre

The Council does not have a statutory duty to dispose of these categories of waste and very few domestic users of the recycling sites dispose of this kind of waste. This decision was made so that those taking advantage of the facility rather than council tax payer generally pay for the service. It is estimated this will produce savings of £485,000. Some Councillors have expressed concern that this could increase the incidents of fly tipping which may cost the Council more to clean up. As a result, this decision has been called into to scrutiny committee to examine.
