300 – 400 People Affected By Bedroom Tax May Get More Money Soon

A challenge to the Government bedroom tax regulations has discovered that some people should not have been having their Housing Benefit reduced. It seems that people living in social housing, at the same address since 1996, who have had Housing benefit all the time, should not have been charged for having a spare room.

Staff in Cornwall need to contact Housing Associations and other social landlords to confirm addresses of residents but it is looking as if between 300 and 400 people in Cornwall will be better off. Once people are identified the restrictions on their claims will be removed but it is expected that Government will close the loophole and that the restriction on their Housing benefit will return.
